Thomas Frewen obtained his M.D. degree some time before 1755, and practised as a surgeon and apothecary at Rye in Sussex, and then as a physician at Lewes. He was one of the first people in the country to adopt the practice of inoculation with small-pox, which he described in his essay on The practice and theory of inoculation (London, 1749). William Mortlock Palmer (1866-1939), physician and antiquary, was born at Melbourn, Cambridgeshire. He was educated locally and at Royston, before entering into an apprenticeship with a Cambridge chemist. He completed his medical training by the age of 29, and thereafter developed a practice among the parishes surrounding Linton.
